Blackbushe - London's lost airport 1942-1960

Blackbushe - London's lost airport 1942-1960

- London's lost airport 1942-1960

Robert Belcher

This history of Blackbushe Airport contains a wealth of information on the operations of the various units based during World War II, including losses. It covers the operations, trials and tribulations of the various independent airlines that started their lives at Blackbushe, their histories and their diverse fleets - mainly secondhand aircraft, with a few modern airliners later on. US Navy operations from Blackbushe, and the aircraft used, are covered. There are over 250 photographs, both colour and black & white: Douglas DC-3/C-47s, Douglas DC-4/C-54s, Vickers Vikings and Viscounts, Bristol 170s, Handley Page Halifaxes and Hermes and Avro Yorks galore, as well as the odd C-46 Commando and Short Stirling and a selection of diverse military visitors.

There are fleet lists for resident airlines during their time at Blackbushe, and a listing of other aircraft also based there over the years. There is also a selective listing of interesting visitors during its civilian era.
