Bomber Losses in the Middle East & Mediterranean

Bomber Losses in the Middle East & Mediterranean

RAF BOMBER LOSSES IN THE MIDDLE EAST & MEDITERRANEAN

Volume 2: 1943–1945

In 2006 Midland Counties, publisher of William Chorley’s RAF Bomber Command Losses, expanded their range of bomber loss coverage by publishing the first of two volumes in which David Gunby and Pelham Temple detailed Royal Air Force Bomber Losses in the Middle East and Mediterranean during the years 1939 to 1942.

The demise of Midland Counties Publishing prevented the publication of Volume Two of Middle East Bomber Losses, but by agreeement with Crecy Publishing, Air-Britain is able to complete the coverage of bomber losses by the RAF, RAAF, RCAF, and SAAF, as well as Polish and Greek units operating under RAF control in the Middle East and Mediterranean from January 1943 to the end of the war in Europe.

With the tide of war running ever more strongly in the Allies’ favour, record keeping improved greatly but even so David Gunby and Pelham Temple faced an immense task in determining not only the circumstances surrounding aircraft lost operating from North Frican and Italian bases, but also of aircraft lost in transit to and from the Mediteranean a vast area geographically.

With the invaluable assistance (again) of maps drawn by Wg. Cdr. Jefford, David Gunby and Pelham Temple have completed a fitting record of the sacrifices made by Allied bomber crews operating far from home, often in inhospitable living conditions.
