Lockheed Model 9B Orion –
The Swiss Revolution

Rob Mulder
A typical European Airlines product focusing on the use by Swissair of the Orion.

At the time of the Orion’s introduction in Europe, many airliners in service flew at a relaxed 140km/hr. Swissair, the national airline of Switzerland, now introduced an aircraft that could fly at a maximum speed of 360km/h, with a typical cruising speed was around 260/280km/hr. Nevertheless, this wooden wonder from the USA flew 50% faster than any other aircraft – a revolution in European aviation. Swissair operated the aircraft with just four passenger seats, as mail was far more important and lucrative to carry.

In this book, the author has described the history of the aircraft with many new details and photographs, colour profiles and a unique cutaway drawing.

This is the first book in the series from European Airlines titled ‘The Few’ which will concentrate on airliners that were only built or operated in a few numbers and flew for a particular airline.

Hardback, A4, 147photos, 14 colour side views, 120 pages.
